A Compulsion to Independence

One of the biggest perks of running an independent company like Shimbi Labs? You get to do weird stuff. The kind of stuff no committee would approve. The kind of stuff that would get a polite corporate “let’s circle back” or a not-so-polite “are you serious?”

But when it’s your company, your call—you can say, “Yes! Let’s do it!” even when the idea sounds completely bonkers. Especially when it does.

Even better? You can greenlight other people’s wild ideas too. That quiet team member with a half-baked “probably-won’t-work-but-maybe” spark? Give them space. Give them time. Give them coffee. Then get out of their way.

At Shimbi Labs, we’ve always believed in giving unusual ideas a chance to breathe. Whether it’s a tiny side project that scratches an itch or a tool that only three people on Earth seem to want—if it makes us curious, we try it. Sometimes it flops. Sometimes it flies. Either way, it’s always worth it.

Here’s the truth: Big companies can’t do this. They’re too busy writing strategy decks and aligning with stakeholders. They need ten approvals to sneeze. You? You just need the itch to try something different.

So if you’re lucky enough to be in this position—independent, nimble, slightly rebellious—don’t waste it. Make the universe smile. Back that oddball idea. Nurture that “what if?” thought.

Because who knows? That weird little project might just be the best thing you've ever built.
